Roots of Empathy - Theme - Crying.

7th Nov 2017

We have moved on to the next theme in our Roots of Empathy classes for the year. We are learning about crying at the moment and thinking about what makes a baby cry. On Monday Darren talked to us about how we feel when we hear a baby cry and the kinds of things we might do to help settle a baby. We had lots of super suggestions, eg. sing a soft lullaby or song, talk the baby for a walk or comfort the baby with a hug or stroke it's head or cheek. On Tuesday baby Ella and her mummy came in to school for their second Roots of Empathy visit. We watched Ella carefully and noted any changes or developments we saw. Luke noticed that her hair has grown, particularly on the top of her head. We thought that Ella was a little bit tired today and she didn't show much interest in the toys that Darren introduced to her, but we predict that over the next number of months she will become more and more interested in the toys that Darren has for Ella to play with. We noticed today that Ella kept her eyes focused on her Mummy and when she cried, she settled very quickly because her mummy picked her up. Ella was very calm when she was in her mummy's arms and when she could see her from the mat. Ella wasn't too keen on Darren doing some exercises with her today! Maybe next time. After Ella left, we had a great discussion about what we had learnt and witnessed through the interaction between Ella and her mummy. Everyone had something to contribute. Today in Literacy we started to make our own book for Roots of Empathy. Very soon we will be able to take Charlie home and show our families what we have been learning about in class.
