P2 and 3 make their new class charter

9th Jan 2017

For the new year, P2 and 3 have been working together on a new class charter for their classroom. This has involved looking at the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC or CRC) to improve well-being and help all children and young people to realise their potential. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child sets out the human rights of every person under the age of 18. The Convention is an international human rights treaty which was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989 and ratified by the UK in 1991. The Convention is a very important document because it recognises that all children and young people have the right to be treated with dignity and fairness, to be protected, to develop to their full potential and to participate. It also lays out what countries must do to ensure that all children and young people can enjoy their rights, regardless of who they are, or where they are from.

We looked at children around the world as part of our WAU topic and how we may want some things, e.g. a personal lap top,  but that there are some things that we really need to be healthy and well. Hence this is why rights are so important. Rights ensure we get the things we need to be happy and healthy, e.g. the right to an education and the right to nutritious food. P2 and 3 worked with their class buddy to sort wants and needs into the correct place on a carroll diagram. There was great discussion as to whether or not each child needed their own bedroom or if it was simply a want! We then took our needs and created our class charter around the most important needs in our classroom to create a happy learning environment! Well done P2 and 3 for working so well with your class buddy!
